CARING FOR YOUR JEWELRY

All Hedron pieces are made lovingly and carefully by hand in the studio in New York with high quality materials and to a high standard of craft. 

Jewelry that is solid gold or silver is very resilient and can be worn non-stop; only polishing to taste. Gold rings with hard stones should have their settings tightened once annually, but are otherwise good to wear as you live your life.

Some notes on softer stones and other jewelry that should be treated with care. Keep in mind the following suggestions.

  • Avoid wearing your pieces in the shower (especially pyrite, opals, steel and bronze),

  • Avoid chemicals coming into contact with your jewelry (including chlorine in pools and hot tubs),

  • Avoid leaving your jewelry out in hot direct sunlight. 

  • Opals are incredibly sensitive to water, oils, creams, lotions, the sun. They can change color, have the opacity change and also easily become pitted or chipped Opals are soft and super beautiful but hard to care for!

  • Steel rings can occasionally leave a temporary red stain on skin, depending on your PH balance.  Your skin will often patina the steel over time and this will stop happening. 

  • If your jewelry has stones, crystals or gems in it, please use extra care- although rare, knocking on metal doors or slamming your hand down on something could crack a stone. 

  • If your jewelry is made from very delicate silver or gold, be aware that it can be crushed or bent out of shape.  We can fix pieces that have been bent out of shape for a small fee - send an email to info@hedronstudio.com.

  • If you like your jewelry shiny, enjoy an occasional polish. Using any standard silver polish is fine.

  • 14k goldfill is a term that describes a layer of gold bonded to a base metal (usually jeweler’s brass or bronze). Goldfill has 5-25x more gold than goldplated jewelry and can last for decades. However, when goldfilled metal is heated, the gold is affected: you will notice on many of the goldfill pieces we make, there is a bi-color, or vintage patina in the gold. This is an artifact of the heating process and produces a color and texture that we find aesthetically pleasing. Many jewelers don’t heat goldfill because it doesn’t hold up the illusion of gold, but we like to play with that duality. The multi colors of heated goldfill are beautiful and dynamic; completely unique.

  • Maintain your goldfill jewelry by polishing the same as you would silver.

  • It is recommended that you get your stones checked annually (especially diamonds and small stones). You can schedule a visit in the studio, or ship your ring to us to tighten stones in place.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR JEWELRY

  • Use an anti-tarnish cloth to carefully polish your jewelry. Even after the cloth has become gray with use, you can continue to use it to polish and shine your piece. We use clothes impregnated with Sunsheen.

  • Wash your jewelry gently with soap and water - but avoid soaking for soft stones. We use a designated toothbrush and mild soap.

  • If your piece is 100% metal, you can submerge it in cleaning fluid like this liquid dip, and finish with the polishing cloth.

  • if your piece is in the ARTIFACT line, you can clean with a scotchbright pad (the rought green side of a dry sponge) or with fine-grit sandpaper, then coat with a small amount of any oil (olive oil, coconut oil) and let it set. The oil treats the metal and will prevent oxidization (rust) for a period of time.

  • Do not put any piece in the supersonic - we use lots of included stones and would hate to see one break in the supersonic bath!

With a little care, your Hedron pieces can be worn safely everyday!
